Cleopatra and Anthony are now in seclusion.
They have been acting "funny" and they have been caterpillars for 12 days now. Monarchs generally begin their transformation into Pupae stage between 10-14 days = so these 2 are right in that timeframe. I have made a Caterpillar Hotel for them, not fancy by any means, but one that should work for them.
I cut an actual stalk of Milkweed and also added in some dried old sticks that have "arms" to them and put these in a container with water with a tinfoil tray underneath to keep stable. Then, I used a small laundry hamper and put this over it. It is not pretty - but one that should allow them the peace and quiet to begin the transformation.
This caught me short as the 2 that I raised last year took a bit more time. Also, they were the last Monarchs of the season as we are lucky to get 2 "crops" of Monarchs where I live. We get the summer ones and then we get the much sturdier, longer lasting ones that begin the treck south.
This year has been instrumental in teaching me that the early crop go into the change mode faster.
Anyhow - pics to follow of their lovely "Hotel Caterpillar".
Thank-you for reading and keep tuned!
